What can Plavitest do for you?

Plavix (clopidogrel) is a very effective medication for preventing clot-related events such as heart attacks or strokes.

Now the success rate can be improved even further by DNA Testing and careful management of other drugs that are being taken with Plavix (clopidogrel). Before Plavix (clopidogrel) can go to work preventing clots, it must be activated in the body. Many patients are unable to perform this activation for two reasons:

  1. Their DNA is unable to produce the enzyme, CYP2C19 (pronounced Sip 2 C 19), essential to Plavix (clopidogrel) activation. Approximately 5% of patients (15-30% of Asians) taking Plavix (clopidogrel) lack CYP2C19, and their physician should consider an alternative medication . Another 25% have reduced functioning, and their physician should consider an increased dose. DNA testing identifies both classes of patients.

  2. They are taking a drug, herbal medicine or food that interferes with their body’s ability to activate Plavix (clopidogrel). Prozac and Prilosec are examples among dozens that block Plavix (clopidogrel) activation.

Plavitest requires only a cheek swab sample to obtain your DNA. The test analyzes the CYP2C19 gene and looks for variations. This can predict your body's ability to process Plavix (clopidogrel) in order to produce the desired effect. A 90-day subscription to your personalized GeneMedRx software account is included with your test results to help you and your physician understand interactions between all of the medicines, herbals and over the counter medicines you take. The GeneMedRx report can aid your physician in making decisions about altering the dosage or form of drugs prescribed to you to prevent interference with Plavix (clopidogrel) effectiveness and other adverse drug reactions.

Be prepared for your next doctor’s visit, print this information package to take with you and ask about Plavitest.
